The ANC’s resolution to destroy a grassroots poor individuals’s motion has been condemned around the globe. The South Africa Council of Churches (SACC) has referred to as the incident "an assault on democracy'' and has issued a press release of alarm at how neighborhood leaders are being criminalised. Bishop Rubin Phillip, the chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council and Anglican Bishop of Natal, who had visited Kennedy Highway, was "torn with anguish'' by the assault and spoke of the real social hope that Abahlali was creating.
